Outdoor Program

Vermont is a wonderful place to hike, camp, ski, or just relax. The Outdoor Program is designed to make sure that each student has the skills to travel safely and comfortably outside and to camp with minimal impact on the environment. On weekly outdoor hikes, students learn map and compass skills, basic camping techniques, and wilderness first aid. A three-day solo trip in the early fall or late spring gives each participant the chance to practice these skills.

Solo

Every semester, in the early fall or late spring, all the students go on "solo", a three-day trip into the Northern New England wilderness. Solo gives participants the chance to practice outdoor skills they have attained in previous hikes, as well as the chance for a guaranteed three days of privacy--a rarity in today's society. Students use this opportunity to read books, whittle or simply to reflect in solitude. Solo is NOT an exercise in outdoor survival, unlike other outdoor programs.

Recreation

The Outdoor Program also encourages students to try recreational activities specific to our locale. Fall-semester students go rock-climbing at Eagle Hollow Ledges, a nearby natural resource. In the spring students receive instruction in snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and many spend their free time exploring campus trails. Safety is always our highest priority, and parents are kept informed of upcoming expeditions.
