Dorm Life

Dorm life is an integral part of The Mountain School experience.  Primarily, dorms provide a comforting atmosphere that creates a home-like familiarity for many students, but more importantly, living together fosters friendship and many unique bonds.

Cooperation is one of the many elements that promotes special connections among dorm mates.  Because much of a student’s time during the evening hours is spent in the dorm doing homework and interacting with friends, dorm mates become especially close over the four month period while roommates often form an even closer bond.  One outstanding aspect of co-living is the possibility of sharing a room with someone from an entirely different background or location, an experience that provides new insight into and perspective on one's life.

The Houses

The Mountain school provides living-space in five separate dorms that house all 45 students in rooms of varying size.  The dorms (Conard, Underwood, Derby, Tobold, Miles) are divided into single sex groups of roughly 10 students with Derby housing only five and each contain two showers and one phone, one feature that requires cooperation among the students.

Dorm Parents and Community

Each dorm is assigned to two dorm parents who live within the dorm and interact regularly with the students.  These dorm parents are responsible for checking in the students at night and for hosting a dorm meeting each week.  Dorm meeting is a time for people to voice their concerns, to make announcements and for general discussion among the entire dorm.
