Frequently Asked Questions: ADMISSIONS

  • We usually receive around 225 applications. We can enroll 100 students each year (50 per semester).

  • The transcript should include all grades earned in high school, including the first semester/trimester of the current year (10th or 11th grade).

  • We require two recommendations from teachers that taught you in academic courses in high school (eg. English, history, math, science, foreign language, arts). Those recommendations can be requested and managed through our online portal, Blackbaud.

  • Occasionally students have asked to send a third recommendation from an advisor, coach, etc.

Although we prefer to receive only two recommendations, if you feel very strongly that a third should be submitted, you can submit it by emailing it to us at admissions@mountainschool.org.

One extra recommendation is the maximum we will accept.

  • We don't inquire about the immigration status for any applicant.

We also do not inquire about immigration status in our need-based scholarship decisions.

  • Our typical fall semester runs from late August through mid-December, with a break around Thanksgiving.

The typical spring semester runs from the first Saturday in February through the first Saturday in June, with a 2.5 week spring break at the end of March.

Please review the Info For Accepted Students Page for the current academic year dates.

  • Applications are due February 15th.

Decisions are released in March, and your family will have two weeks from your notification date to make a decision whether to accept your spot at TMS, pay your deposit, and complete your contract.

Depending on how many students accept our offer of admission, we’ll go to the waitlist beginning in April.

  • Our overall acceptance rate is usually 30-40%, and is even more competitive in overrepresented parts of our applicant pool.

This leads to the difficult reality that we could not admit many students who we know would thrive at the Mountain School.

We are grateful for your interest in our program, and the time and effort you took to complete your application. If you remain interested in the Mountain School, please be sure to keep in touch with us.

  • Our use of the waitlist is determined by the response we receive from admitted students so it varies from year to year and is difficult to predict.

In a typical year, we admit a 3-5 students from the waitlist.

  • No. Because of our desire for a balanced group each semester, we wait to see which students decline before reviewing all wait list candidates to determine who would be the best fit for the open place(s).

  • The only information that can be helpful is a sense of whether you are still truly interested in the Mountain School. If so, you can send a short email to admissions@mountainschool.org to reaffirm your interest. Please do not submit additional recommendations or other information.
