A Welcome Message from Our Director
Welcome to the Mountain School!
Since my arrival on campus in July of 2022, I have come to appreciate how very much the Mountain School is a part of the world and simultaneously apart from the world. This campus, our program, one might even argue the ecological system which we inhabit, rely on the balance between engagement and patience.
And that balance isn’t always easy to achieve.
At the Mountain School, we ask students to turn in their phones, turn off the wifi, and connect to each other. At the same time, we ask them to consider the systems in which we exist and question how we arrived at this point, and what we can do better. We step back from the world to consider it more closely.
We ask students to leave their homes, their schools, their families, to make a new home, a new school, a new community. We challenge each other to be fully present, to acknowledge that we don’t always know how to do something, that work can be difficult, and we all have the capacity to learn and make mistakes and forgive and grow together.
That is a tricky balance to achieve. But I believe that if we can find that balance and trust in it, we are well on the way to becoming better individuals and better growers and shapers of true communities. The work of every semester - and the encounters I have with alumni shaped by this program - gives me hope.
Please explore this website and, if you are ever up in Vermont, come explore our campus as well.
