Taking Standardized Tests during a Mountain School Semester

What tests can I take while at the Mountain School?

The SAT is the standardized test that has been most widely used as part of the college admissions process. In preparation for the SAT, many students choose to take the PSAT in their junior year. The ACT is an excellent alternative to the SAT and/or SAT subject tests. Some students find its achievement-based focus a more comfortable fit. (In particular, students who find that the Critical Reading section of the PSAT or SAT does not match their ability and performance in English should strongly consider the ACT.) Most schools will accept the ACT as a replacement for the SAT.

Over the past several years, more schools have made standardized tests an optional part of their admissions process. Students should make the decision whether or not to register for these tests in conversation with their families and guidance counselor prior to arriving at The Mountain School. Most students planning to submit standardized tests as part of their college applications choose the following sequence as recommended by their guidance counselors: one SAT and/or ACT in the spring of junior year; and then one SAT and/or ACT in the fall of senior year.

The PSATs are administered on campus during the fall semester.  This year, the College Board will be requiring students to take a digital version of the exam; please be sure to review the requirements for digital test taking on the College Board website and download the necessary technology before you arrive on campus.

How will TMS support me with taking these tests?

The Mountain School supports students who choose to take these exams by providing transportation to the appropriate nearby exam center.

In addition, all students will have the opportunity to take the PSAT exam on The Mountain School campus during the fall semester.

Please remember that you are responsible for registering any exam (other than the PSAT) you would like to take, and all College Board or ACT deadlines apply.

What test dates are available?

The following will be your test date options:

SAT: Students who want to take the SAT should register for the exam taking place on MAY 4, 2024  at Hanover High School in Hanover, NH (Center Code 30160). We will provide transportation to and from the test.

ACT: Students who want to take the ACT should register for the exam taking place on APRIL 13, 2024 at the Mountain School (Center Code 257470).

Advanced Placement (AP): The AP exams will be administered on campus May 6-10, 2024 and May 13-17, 2024.

How can I register for the SAT or ACT?

Students should register for SAT &/or ACT tests before coming to the Mountain School. You can do so online at www.collegeboard.com (SAT) or www.actstudent.org (ACT).

Please use the information listed below when registering to test while you’re at The Mountain School:

  • Use your own school’s code for the “high school code” for all tests. This is the code for the school to which test scores will be sent.

  • Use your home address as the street address.

  • Use the appropriate center code listed above.

If you have any questions about the registration process, please reach out to info@mountainschool.org.

How can I register for an AP exam?

The Mountain School offers two registration options for on-site AP exams, though you are not required to take any AP exams while you are here. We offer standard AP EXAM registration associated with Mountain School AP courses (e.g. AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Spanish, etc.). We also offer an AP EXAM ONLY registration option for course subjects for which we do not offer an AP course (e.g. AP Literature and Composition, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, etc.).

If you are planning an AP EXAM ONLY registration associated with a first-semester AP course(s) that you are taking at your home school, we ask that you enroll in your exam with the appropriate Mountain School join code by November 12, 2023 at the latest. Registering after the November deadline will incur a late fee from the College Board.

Students planning to take an AP EXAM associated with a Mountain School AP course in which they will be enrolled in the spring can enroll in their exam by March 1, 2024 using the appropriate Mountain School join code.

Please visit the College Board website for more detailed information.

If you have any questions, please send an email to info@mountainschool.org

If you are unsure about how to enroll for your exam, you can find a quick and easy tutorial video HERE.
